Tesco wins Green Retailer of the Year award

This year’s Green Retailer of the Year award was given to Tesco at the end of March by the Drinks Business Green Awards. The awards, held annually, are given out to businesses that have made an outstanding effort in eco-friendly retail habits.

In recent years, the international supermarket chain has implemented several schemes designed to promote sustainable business practices. Many of these methods have surrounded alcoholic beverages and the company’s commitment to making them more environmentally friendly.

The company has been instrumental in the development of a 75 per cent paperboard-based product called Tetra-pak. The packing material is easily recycled. Tesco’s wide range of popular Spanish wines are now sold in Tetra-pak containers. Since being launched, the wines have sold extremely well with up to 20,000 being sold each week.

With the success of the Spanish wines packed in Tetra-pak, Tesco plans to extend the line offering a wider variety. Tesco has also begun reducing the weight of glass for their own Tesco Own Brand wines. So far the line has had up to 5,500 mega tonnes of glass cut out from its production.

Tesco has made other alterations to their business operations as well, including importing items in bulk, transporting wines by ferry, and improving upon overall recycling efforts. The supermarket giant has also been venturing into composting.

Tesco also recently announced they would develop a range of carbon footprinted wines. The wines, produced in New Zealand, will have their environmental impact ratings printed directly on the label for customers to see.
