The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently signed PC Recycler, an electronic waste management firm, to help recycle around 335,000 items of electric storage equipment, as well as destroy any data which might be left in the items.
According to Environmental Protection, the contract will see roughly 100,000 pounds of electronic material be recycled which includes the plastic and metal scraps from the equipment. The facilities used by PC Recycler to handle such contracts feature a dual-shaft shredder used to shred 1,000 pounds of equipment each hour.
According to the NIST Special Publication 800-88 regulations, the IRS must have all residual optical, electrical, and magnetic data destroyed completely from any computer waste in a way that is complete and irretrievable.
The announcement comes at the same time as EPA kicks-off their National Cell Phone Recycling Week designed to work with communities and cell providers to promote mobile phone recycling. Last year, the UN released a study which stated that waste from electronics being improperly disposed was becoming a leading issue in the fight against climate change.
Now, firms that deal with electronic equipment such as cell phone service providers, PC manufacturers, and appliance manufacturers have started to increase efforts to get consumers to recycle their old and unwanted mobile phones, PCs, and appliances.
