Starbucks’ Board of Directors shot down a proposal last week put forth by one of the coffee giants’ shareholders. The proposal called for the already eco-friendly company to take a firmer stance on recycling. The proposal aimed at getting Starbucks to get down even further on the amount of waste which leaves their stores.
As You Sow is supporting the measure, which has also been used to get Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to take more aggressive stances for the environment. Despite receiving less than 10 percent in shareholder votes that these companies, the measures were successful in bringing about major recycling changes to each firm.
The organisation, As You Sow, aims to curb Starbucks waste habits, which it says, despite appearing to be at the forefront on environmentally friendly consumerism is actually behind most major competitors in recycling.
For example, as opposed to supplying recycling containers for their customers’, Starbucks merely displays the location of the nearest recycling centre to each store. Although Starbucks openly lobbies for better recycling infrastructure, many are upset that it does not have recycling bins in their stores where city-wide recycling is collected by the city.
In the proposed measure, which was shot-down by Board Members, it reveals that Starbucks has not plans to use recycled plastic for their Ethos bottled water. Environmentalists have pointed out the irony in Starbucks’ stance as their Ethos Water is used to fund safe water projects in developing countries. Yet, the bottles themselves are environmentally unsound.
