Northumberland couple wins recycling competition

Two Northumberland locals won a laptop and a printer have competing in the City Council’s awareness campaign to encourage residents and households to recycle. George and Liz Sancaster, from Cramlington, entered to compete in the City Council sponsored competition and came out the winners.

Entries were made by visiting the council’s website and watching a short video on recycling. Potential competitors than were asked one question about the video. In total, more than 500 people participated in the competition.

The couple have taken their prize and given it to their grandson, Lewis Fairfax, who will begin university later in the year. The laptop and printer prize was just part of the reward, in addition the couple will take a VIP tour of SITA UK’s Materials Recycling Facility in West Sleekburn. The facility will soon be responsible for processing most of Northumberland’s recycling.

The new centre features state-of-the-art equipment which will be able to separate plastics, paper, card, and have the ability to process 15 tonnes of material per hour. The faciliity is 9,000 square metres, roughly the size of six Olympic swimming pools.

The West Sleekburn centre is a project between SITA UK and the local city council, who have been working together closely for 28 years to revolutionize recycling habits in the county. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to see out a significant reduction in the county’s reliance on landfills. By 2012, the county hopes that only 8 percent of local waste will be sent to landfill.

The impact the massive reduction of waste sent to landfill will have on the local environment will be huge, and the move comes at a time when councils across the UK are under a tremendous amount of pressure to increase recycling in households in order to comply with new European regulations.
