The UK’s Environment Secretary stated firmly that recyclable items typically placed in the black bins in the UK will have to be recycled, burned, or allowed to decay. Items such as garden waste, plastics, paper cards, and food.
Currently households in the UK receive black bins for waste disposal, but it is believed that those black bins are soon to be a thing of the past as the UK moves towards total recycling of household waste. The black bins may be replaced by up to 3 recycling bins on eof which may be a food bin.
Earlier local government association said that putting these new measures in place will cost up to £1.1 billion and that the government would need to be prepared to bear the burden of that cost should the black bins be replaced with multiple recycling containers.
In addition to the new disposal system, rumors are flying amid growing concern that heavy fines would be incurred by households which did not comply with disposal requirements, but this has not yet been confirmed by Local Authorities.
A spokesperson at Defra said that in light of the news, it would be important for the Local Authorities to remember that it is up to them to work with the community to reduce, reuse, recycle where it is possible. They added that heavy fines are not the solution.
