UK government amps up household recycling efforts

Local UK authorities are beginning to move towards stricter recycling policies which is raising some questions of privacy and has several pro-privacy groups up in arms. Some localities are even looking into removing the “black bins” completely.

Authorities have announced jointly a 12 week consultation period in which they will consider the decision to introduce more recycling bins until UK households are recycling relatively everything that is being thrown out.

The question now is, what the consequences will be for those who do not adhere to stricter recycling policies. Some councils have begun placing microchips into wheelie bins to monitor how much each household is recycling.

While the councils say that these are in place as a means to reward households recycling heavily, many big brother watch groups believe that it is an infringement on privacy and could be used as a tool to monitor what people are throwing out.

No MP has come forward to confirm the growing rumors that fines could be implemented for households which have failed to recycle all of their waste, but there are increasing concerns that this could happen in the short or medium term.

EU regulations and fines are increasing as the demand to send less waste to landfill looms over the UK. With this threat, the government is scrambling to avoid hefty EU fines and increase UK household recycling. The move will be to have recycling practices such as sorting and separating take place at home, instead of falling on the heads of the government.
