Redbridge Council Urges Residents to Recycle Old Phone Directories

UK residents are being urged to recycle their old phone books in order to prevent massive amounts of paper waste which has begun accumulating in UK landfill sites. Each year thousands of the popular Yellow Pages phone directories are issued to their customers, however many do not recycle the old phone books leaving paper waste to pile up across the country.

Each year in Redbridge thousands of copies of the popular phone directory are being sent into the rubbish bin and hauled straight to a landfill. Now, the Redbridge Council is hoping to curb this environmentally unfriendly habit and encourage residents to begin recycling them instead.

A spokeswoman for the council said that it is possible now to place Yellow Pages and any other phone directories into the kerbside recycling bin or the flats recycling bin. The bin, which formerly was just for newspapers and magazines, can now take phone directories as well.

In the past, she added many UK recycling centres did not accept Yellow Pages and such things, but now more are beginning to realize the need for recycling in this area and accept them. Also coupled with a reduction in ink intensity by Yellow Pages, it is now easier to recycle the phone pages into reusable paper.

Recycled directories can be used to make animal bedding, Jiffy bags, loft insulation, egg boxes, and cardboard. The Redbridge Council is also encouraging residents who do not regularly use the directories to cancel the service. They added that many people now just use internet making the directories redundant. The council has encouraged these individuals to contact their phone directory provider and request a stop service for their households.
