West Norwood and Streatham residents are being encouraged by the thousands to begin recycling their food waste in a new green scheme which will be extended to these areas shortly. New kitchen equipment designed to make separating food waste easier is being handed out to households in the area.
The idea is to provide up to 1,500 households around the Streatham area with the new equipment to make separating food waste from other household waste easier and thus encourage more households to separate waste. Another 1,500 households in West Norwood will also receive the equipment.
The equipment, which includes a kitchen caddy, starch liners, and an outdoor caddy, will make it more simple for residents to separate uncooked and cooked waste prior to piling them into the rubbish bin. The idea is to keep as much food waste out of landfills as possible.
Each week, the council will collect the separated waste and use it for compost to give to local farmers around south east England. Not only will this new scheme cut down on food waste going to landfill, but will also reduce the need for farmers in the area to rely on artificial fertilizers.
Lambeth Council already conducted a trial on this scheme and after great success has added Streatham and West Norwood to the trail to continue implementing the food waste recycling scheme.
