New WEEE Facility in Grantham Built by EnvironCom

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been identified by experts as a growing issue for countries to begin dealing with more aggressively. The UN, recently released a report warning developing countries to begin recycling their e-waste or it could have an unsavory impact on the environment down the line.

In response to this growing need, A UK based waste management company, EnvironCom has opened up their largest WEEE facility to date. Located in Grantham, the facility consists of four separate plants which can process and recycle up to 100,000 tonnes per year of  WEEE waste. That is approximately 10% of what the UK produces as a whole in WEEE waste per year.

Each hour the new facility’s four plants can process over 100 TVs, 100 refrigerators, and 100 other household appliances each. Joe Quigley, CEO of EnvironCom said that the Grantham facility utilizes the most state-of-the-art equipment. He added that the company has invested £10 million to incorporate the newest technology in order to meet current and evolving requirements in the industry.

UK households produce more than 1.2 million tonnes of WEEE waste per year and this figure has been increasing by 5% each year, which makes it the fastest growing waste issue in the UK. New facilities like the Grantham facility will help prevent a lot of that waste being shipped over to inadequate landfill sites around the developing world.
