Recent figures just released indicate that a record number of households and businesses recycled cardboard during the Christmas and New Years holidays in North Devon. During the two week holiday, the North Devon Council collected up to 70 tonnes of cardboard to be recycled during a kerbside cardboard collection.
Rodney Cann, councillor and a Lead Member for the Waste and Recycling, stated that the figures indicate that North Devon residents are taking steps to begin using the cardboard recycling services being offered. He continued saying that it was great news for the council to hear and that it was nice to see locals becoming more involved in community recycling. He added, however, that the county would still need to increase efforts to cut down on waste by recycling everyday. He even suggested that residents look for products which are similar to one another but buy the one that contains less packaging.
The cardboard recycling service went into effect last October. Since being put in place up until the close of January residents have recycled a total of 377 tonnes of cardboard products. The service is offered weekly and households can take advantage by placing flattened cardboard into provided reusable brown bags. The waste is collected and recycled into new cardboard.
The Council has issued a phone number for residents to contact if they need a brown bag or if they have any questions about composting, recycling, or collection services. Residents can call 01271 374776 for help with recycling.
