Recycling Rates in Scotland Exceed Expectations

Recycling rates are continuing to be on the rise in Scotland, prompting the government to once again increase recycling target rates. Currently, the country is comfortably meeting their target recycling rate of 30%. A recent report released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency indicates that currently recycling and composting rates are now at 35.9%.

The government had set this target between October 2008 and September 2009, and reached their goal, even surpassing it by a little more than five percent. However, in order to keep improving upon recycling habits within Scotland, the country will now aim to have a 40% recycling rate by the close of 2010.

Kenny Boag, the waste policy unit manager for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, said that he was encouraged by the continuing increase of recycled rates in Scotland’s municipalities. He also added that Scotland is very likely to meet its new goal as recycling is still on the rise in each municipality. However, Boag did add that new services, facilities, and requirements would need to be put in place to meet new goals.

Eventually, the Scottish government has expressed the desire to achieve a zero waste society. However, to do so the country will have to aggressively reduce its amount of waste exponentially increasing recycling rates. The government did, however, emphasize that they were a long way from accomplishing this, however, the Scottish recycling rate is the highest in the world at present.
