While the United Kingdom has been able to successfully raise recycling rates, especially in homes, there has been very little done to force businesses to become greener. Some have taken matters into their own hands by doing environmental audits to see where they can get greener. Businesses around the world have been assessing their companies as of late to see where they can cut corners and save money. One of the best ways for a company to do this is to make its practices friendlier to the environment. One area that some companies are falling behind is in printing, where research has shown companies tend to fail when it comes to waste. Although recycling levels for most companies have improved, studies have shown that most lack proper governance over documents being created in the first place.
Studies from Ricoh, a leader in the printing industry, showed that companies are missing many opportunities to become greener though document governance. Ricoh has found that there are a variety of ways that companies can cut the amount of waste that they have simply by doing an audit of the environmental aspects of document governance. What they found is that most companies are not auditing the environmental aspects of many of their printing practices.
Ricoh suggests that companies centralize their printing so that employees are not allowed to just print at will. When people are at home they think about things like paper and ink waste, but at the office someone else is paying for it so people are less vigilant about being wasteful.
