Nokia Pushes Mobile Phone Recycling

As countries continue to develop they have more access to technology.  While this is a good thing for people in these countries it is bad for the environment, as it means more discarded waste for landfills.  This is especially true for mobile phones, which now number in the billions worldwide and are becoming cheaper and more available to developing nations.  Not only are mobile phones eating up precious space in landfills but chemicals from mobile phone batteries can leak into the soil and eventually find their way into drinking water.  This is why governments around the world have been pressuring mobile phone companies to come up with new and unique schemes to motivate their customers to recycle more.

One of these companies is industry giant Nokia, which has been using its considerable influence to make positive changes in developing nations like India.  As countries like India and China continue to develop at a rapid pace, even more mobile phones are being put into the cycle.  Studies have shown that people in developing nations are unaware of the dangers of mobile phones in landfills and many are unsure of how to dispose of their phones in a proper way.  With more and more people buying phones every minute Nokia decided to be preemptive in its attempts to get India on track.

Nokia has launched campaigns in India aimed at recycling mobile phones, including placing recycling bins in Nokia centers around India.  With countries like India and China gaining more access to technology, this will be a key issue for the future.
