UK Needs More Focus on Plastics and Aluminum Collections

The United Kingdom has been desperate to improve its recycling rates and has been looking at a number of new and innovative ways to do so.  The government has launched many schemes and studies in an effort to get people to produce less waste and recycle more.  The results have been mixed thus far as recycling rates in the UK have gone up but not as fast as some would like.  This is especially true for the Labour Party, who were hoping to use environmental successes as a way to set themselves apart from the Conservatives, who are usually associated with big business.  Some studies have suggested some ways in which the United Kingdom can raise their recycling rates.  A recent report from the PackFlow Group suggested that the best way for the UK to increase recycling rates would be to focus on the recovery of aluminum and plastics.

The report claims that capturing plastics and aluminum from households as well as from outside the home will be the best way to raise recycling rates in the United Kingdom.  The suggestion is to increase collection to include items that are largely overlooked under current collection policies.  The report claimed that even though packaging recycling should reach seventy percent over the next two years, increased collection will still be necessary to get the recycling rates where the UK wants them to be.  Foils and mixed plastics are often overlooked by collectors, which is precisely what the PackFlow report says the UK needs to improve.
