Kraft Reduces Package Weight Ahead of Schedule

Under pressure from governments, businesses and industries around the world are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and the amount of waste that they send to landfills.  Governments have started to put the responsibility for clean up and collection of rubbish on the shoulders of the people who are producing it in an effort to increase recycling rates and divert more waste from landfills.  The idea is that strictly regulating industries is much easier than regulating the behavior of individuals.  This is why the European Union has started a battery collection initiative which puts the responsibility of collection and recycling on the people who make batteries.  Many companies are predicting that similar laws and regulations will be imposed on their business and are being proactive about making the necessary changes before the laws go into effect.

Kraft Foods is one company that has taken the initiative to reduce the amount of packaging created by their products.  The company recently announced that since 2005 it has reduced the amount of packaging used in its product by more than sixty eight thousand tonnes.  Many believe that Kraft is trying to take over confectionary giant Cadbury and that this announcement was made to better position themselves for that take over by promoting their green efforts.  The reduction in packaging weight has put Kraft on pace to hit their packaging reduction marks more than two years ahead of schedule.

Kraft says that it will continue to reduce packaging and make it lighter by removing layers without reducing the safety of the product.
