Even though most of the scientific world agrees that global warming is not only real but poses a direct threat to human life, there are still those who think that it is merely a scare tactic and that the changes in weather patterns are part of the natural cycle of the earth. The global warming skeptics were given fodder for their cannons last month when a study about the rapid decline of the Himalayan glaciers was found to be exaggerated at best and completely false at worst. Since then the United Nation’s Climate Change Panel has been under fire for their lack of investigation into the evidence contained in the report. Some people are calling for Rajendra Pachauri’s resignation but since the mistake the United Nations has supported the embattled climate change.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change caused a stir with a report that claimed that the Himalayan glaciers were melting at such a fast rate that they could disappear completely over the next twenty years. Some scientists immediately denounced the claim and it turns out that they were correct, and the Himalayan glaciers are not receding faster than any other glaciers. The mistake has given ammunition to those who claim that environmental groups are using scare tactics that involve inflating information and dates as a way to gain support for their agenda.
The UN has offered their support to Pachauri and say that they will not ask him to step down from his post. The Prime Minister of India has also expressed his confidence in the panel and its chairman.
