One of the biggest issues when it comes to the recycling of plastics is that people often mix plastic that cannot be recycled in with their recycling. The public remains largely uneducated about which types of plastics are ok for recycling and which are at the end of the line. Some types of plastic items, namely plastic bags, are unable to be recycled and it takes thousands of man hours and pounds to remove all of these things from recycling bins. As technology continues to develop, more and more items are now able to be recycled and plants are popping up around the United Kingdom to take advantage of these advancements. The Waste Resources Action Programme recently announced that it would be funding a mixed plastic facility that will be able to handle more than twenty thousand tonnes of mixed plastics per year.
Greenstar WES received the WRAP grant to recycled non-bottle mix plastics, which until recently were unable to be handled by most facilities in the UK. Things like yogurt pots and meat trays, butter tubs will now be collected from the area and recycled at the Greenstar mixed plastics facility. Non-bottle plastic recycling still remains low in the United Kingdom so this new facility represents the beginning of a new era where plastic will be recycled at a much higher rate.
WRAP recently announced a new initiative in which they hope to increase the non-bottle plastic recycling in the United Kingdom to 40,000 tonnes over the next year.
