Because of the recent holiday season there has been a lot of news in the media about waste, specifically food waste. Both Hilary Benn and Gordon Brown urged citizens of the United Kingdom to be careful about the food they were wasting. Food waste not only clogs up landfills but can create dangerous methane gas as it breaks down. Green technology is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing segments of the business world. Companies are looking for new and innovative ways to not only help the environment, but to make a profit in the process. Recent reports have indicated that in the future green technology and alternative energy will be one of the largest segments of the world economy. Air travel is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions but a recent innovation may lessen the impact.
East Midlands Airport has teamed with Gasrec, a producer of Liquid Biomethane, to start a six month test where the carbon neutral fuel will be used to power airport transfer buses. The buses will use fuel which is generated by the decomposition of biomass, such as food waste. This gives airports a viable option of reducing their carbon footprint, as well as keeping harmful organic biomass out of landfills. When organic matter like food waste starts to break down it releases methane into the ground, which when released is far more harmful than carbon. The Airport looks to be come carbon neutral by the year 2020.
