One of the biggest environmental issues facing the world today is how to create energy without polluting the environment. Although energy from waste plants are becoming more common there is still a lack of these types of facilities which means that countries continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels for heat and electricity even though supplies are dwindling and become increasingly more expensive. Some experts predict that if energy continues to increase in price at the current rate that the average person in the United Kingdom will soon not be able to afford to heat their home. A recent study shows that unless the United Kingdom makes a large financial commitment to energy there could be energy shortages in the near future.
Ofgem, an energy regulator, recently released a report which claimed that mainland Britain would face power shortages in the upcoming years if serious investment is not made in the infrastructure of the nation.
Ofgem also maintains that many consumers will not be able to afford the rapidly increasing cost of powering their homes. Ofgem also claimed that there was serious doubt that any of the sustainable energy sources that are being developed would be enough to fix the problems that will come in the next ten years. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband disagreed with this assessment and said that he believed that the new developments would be enough to sustain Britain over the upcoming decade.
Ofgem said that it would take a two hundred billion pound investment by energy companies to produce the necessary amount of alternative energy.
