Britain Must Focus on More than just Carbon

As the world moves on towards a greener future many are offering suggestions for how the United Kingdom can remain competitive amid all of this change.  The United Nations summit on climate change, although called a failure by most, did succeed in raising awareness about the importance of carbon emissions.  This led to carbon emissions being the number one environmental issue in recent memory, and although it is very important, it is certainly not the only issue that needs to be addressed.  A recent study by the Aldersdate Group revealed that if the United Kingdom wants to remains economically competitive with the rest of the world, it must do more than just focus on cuts on carbon emissions.

The group, which is made of a diverse group of non-governmental organizations, businesses, think tanks, and individuals, reported waste, water, and food management were equally important as carbon emissions and that if businesses do not focus on these issues they will not be able to remain competitive in the modern world.  The report, which was presented to the government, claimed that businesses in the United Kingdom could save nearly six and a half billion pounds a year just by better managing their water, food, waste, and energy resources.  The report said that the government needs to be more active in regulating water usage, as increased population and the effects of global warming could put strains on water supplies.

Studies have also shown that although Brits are doing better with household waste that many of them do not carry these policies with them into the office.
