As people around the United Kingdom and the world try to adopt greener lifestyles there are a multitude of businesses rising up to meet the demand for greener products and technology. This has made for fierce competition between waste management companies who aim to get the lucrative contracts from local councils and districts. The government of the United Kingdom has put pressure on local councils to come up with new and innovative ways to increase the recycling rates and reduce waste, and all of this without raising taxes or spending a lot of money. This means that contracts for waste management must be carefully considered, so that contracts are not awarded to companies that cannot handle all or parts of the job.
Recently the Westminster City Council awarded one of the largest recycling, waste management, and street cleaning contracts in the United Kingdom to Veolia. The contract is worth a staggering five hundred and eighteen million pounds, making it one of the largest every awarded for waste management in the United Kingdom. The deal will include six hundred and fifty full time employees who will work twenty four hours a day every day of the year to ensure that Westminster is kept clean. Veolia will use environmentally friendly rubbish trucks for collection, and the city hopes that additional collections and awareness will help to raise the recycling rates. Since Westminster is a very densely populated and built part of the United Kingdom it poses particular difficulties for rubbish collection and waste management.
