If you asked most people if they wanted to live near a volcano the answer would be a resounding no. This is not the case for people who live in Stockton on Tees which is located in the northeast of the United Kingdom, who are looking forward to a volcano being built on the edge of their town. That is because this volcano is not the kind that spews out molten lava, but instead pumps out enough energy and heat to power the entire town. In an effort to get more energy from waste these types of facilities are going up all over the United Kingdom and offer some of the most exciting innovations in the energy and waste management segment.
More than one hundred thousand homes will get both heat and electricity from the green peak which will start being constructed in 2010. In an effort to not ruin the aesthetics the plant was designed to fit into the grasslands that surround Middlehaven, which is trying to reinvent itself as an area with striking buildings and architecture. The plant will be powered by palm kernel shells, which are waste from palm oil factories that are located in Malaysia. This type of crop waste is one of the most exciting developments in energy from waste technology. This ensures that fields will not be grown specifically for biofuel but will rather be the results of growing food.
The plant would produce eighty percent less carbon emissions than a standard coal powered plant, even when the trip from Malaysia is factored in.
