Recently a scientific body of the United Nations was embarrassed when they had to admit that a dire environmental prediction that they made was not true. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was red faced when they had to admit that their prediction that the Himalayan glaciers would be melted by 2035 was completely wrong. The IPCC admitted that they used old evidence to make their claim and that the evidence had not been properly peer reviewed. Using this evidence as it basis a summit of Nepalese officials met during the Copenhagen climate change summit to raise awareness about the plight of the glaciers that turned out not to be melting at the rate that was announced in the report. In the wake of all of this many people are pointing fingers and trying to determine how a mistake this large was made, as these types of errors only hurt the cause.
Rajendra Pachauri, who is the chairman of the IPCC, has many critics who claim that he should step down, but thus far he has refused. His critics say that this error damages the scientific credibility of not only the IPCC but of the entire issue of climate change. There are still many who believe that global warming is just part of the natural cycle of nature and has nothing to do with human actions. The case came to the attention of the media after several scientists disputed the 2035 date given for the demise of the glaciers. The body attributed the mistake to human error.
