On February 1 new laws will be launched which will require battery manufacturers as well as retailers to offer their customers free battery recycling and in some cases free collections. Retailers who sell more than thirty two kilograms of batteries annually will be required to offer free recycling in their stores, and manufacturers of industrial and automotive batteries will not only be required to recycled them for free, but will also be responsible for pickup as well. These new laws hope to put the responsibility back on the people who are making the product and lessening the burden on the customer. Since this has been announced many retailers are scrambling to add the necessary elements to their store, which will be both a recycling bin as well as notification that they are a location which can collect old batteries.
To help businesses in their efforts Booker, who is the leading drink and food wholesaler in the UK, has offered retailers a kit which will provide everything they need to comply with the new laws. Booker has teamed up with Valpak to offer retailers battery collection boxes, as well as stickers which advertise that they are a battery recycling collection location. Booker even offers boxes in different sizes so that every business from small to large will have a bin that will suit their needs. After collecting the batteries retailers can then call manufacturers to come and collect them for free.
Currently batteries are recycled at a very low rate which is dangerous because they often leak harmful chemicals into landfills.
