Price for Cans Goes up Again

The recycling rates in the United Kingdom were nothing short of pathetic a mere few years ago, but now, thanks to efforts by the government and local councils, the rates have increased.  While there is still a long way to go, there have been many effective schemes launched in the UK which have raised recycling rates, especially when it comes to household recycling.  Because of the increase several recycling markets have gotten more competitive and forced companies to pay more for the material or to offer additional services to the customer such as free pick up and collection.  This is good for both businesses and households, as the businesses get more materials to recycle and people get more incentives to do so.

Recently Novelis, in an effort to get more aluminum, announced that it would be raising the price it pays for aluminum for the third time in less than a month.  This now means that local councils and individuals will be paid eight hundred pounds per each tonne of aluminum.  They can get up to eight hundred and fifty pounds if the cans are densified or baled.  Novelis says that part of the reason for the increase is that they want to show customers that they are committed to a long term strategy of offering top prices for good materials.  They also said that the market as a whole has gone up and this price reflects that change.

These prices should allow local councils to get more for their efforts which they can then re-invest in their recycling infrastructure.
