New Lightweight Wine Bottle used by Tesco

Tesco has been one grocery store chain which is trying to do its part to lower its carbon footprint, and the footprint of its customers.  They recently launched a policy in which buy one get one free offers were delayed to become buy one get one free later.  The reason for this is that these deals often lead to people buying more of an item than they really need, which causes a lot of waste, especially with perishable items like food.  Food waste contributes a large amount to landfills, so by instituting this program Tesco is doing their part to divert waste from landfills.  Tesco has also started encouraging customers to use fewer plastic bags by offering reusable cloth bags for sale in the aisles, or by charging customers a small fee for the plastic bag.

Another scheme was launched recently which aims to lower the amount of glass used in the United Kingdom.  Kingsland Wine and Spirits has developed a lighter weight wine bottle which uses less glass than the traditional size.  Kingsland claims that the bottle is currently the lightest weight glass wine bottle on the market.  The standard bottle weighs four hundred and twenty grams, while the new lighter weight bottle will weigh three hundred grams.  This may not seem like a lot, but the thirty percent reduction in size actually represents a carbon savings of two thousand five hundred tonnes per year.

Kingsland believes that the new bottle will be the standard not just for wine but for other drinks as well.
