Eco Design is Newest Household Trend

One of the biggest trends around the United Kingdom is to find ways to make the home more sustainable and environmentally friendly.  After the Copenhagen climate summit was declared a failure by almost everyone involved it became clear that if real progress is going to be made, it must be done by individuals and that people can no longer wait for world leaders to solve all of their problems.  This has led to some interesting innovations in home design, as residents try to find ways to make their homes more eco-friendly.  Not only are residents recycling at higher rates but they are looking for other ways to make their homes more sustainable by using alternative energy, and reusing many products that they formally would have thrown away, including furniture.

One of the recent trends in home design has been the use of second hand furniture.  By buying furniture that is used, residents are not only saving the materials that would have had to be used to make new furniture, but they are also keeping the old furniture out of landfills, where they take up valuable space.  Second hand shops around the United Kingdom have reported an increase in second hand clothing and furniture sales over the last few years, partially due to the poor economy forcing people to cut corner, and partially due to a desire to lead greener more sustainable lifestyles.

In addition, residents are increasingly using things like cloth bags instead of plastic, using slop buckets to collect food waste, and turning lawn clippings into compost.
