Solutia UK Gets Energy from Waste

Some of the most exciting recent innovations in technology have been related to the environment.  As people become more educated about recycling and waste management they are increasingly asking for more technology to help them achieve greener lifestyles.  Governments and local councils, under pressure to raise recycling rates and decrease waste, have been inviting new and innovative businesses into their communities in an effort to create jobs as well as help reduce waste.   Possibly the most exciting innovations have come in the energy from waste field, where plants are using a variety of techniques to turn rubbish into heat and electricity.  Everything from discarded food, to human feces has been used to create waste, which is exciting as it both keeps rubbish from reaching landfills and offers an alternative to fossil fuels.

Recently Waste Recycling Group announced that they would be building an energy from waste plant near Newport that will take rubbish and turn it into power.  The plant, which will be located on land owned by Solutia UK in Newport, Wales will support the district heating grid by using steam created by burning local waste to create power.  This will also allow Solutia to reduce its carbon footprint by using steam from the plant to create both electricity and heat.  The plant, which will take around two years to build, is part of Project Green which hopes to support the local authorities of Caerphilly, Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Newport, and Monmouthshire.

The plant is just one in a series of energy from waste plants that are currently under construction in the United Kingdom.
