Flat Recycling Needs a Boost in UK

Over the last year the United Kingdom has taken a lot of heat over its failure to meet many of the European Union’s directives when it comes to recycling and waste management.  The European Union laid out specific directives for each of its member nations to reduce the amount of rubbish that was being sent to landfills and to increase recycling rates.  This led to the government pushing for local councils to come up with new and innovative ways to achieve higher recycling rates.  The efforts have definitely shown success, as the UK has increased its recycling rates, especially from homes, which are now doing their part to make the UK greener.  However, in multi-occupancy dwellings like large apartment complexes or rows of flats, there is still much work to be done.

The UK has succeeded in getting households to recycled more, but when it comes to flats people are still not getting the message.  There are many reasons for this, such as smaller amounts of space mean there is little room for multiple rubbish and recycling bins, and often large rows of flats or big condo or apartment complexes offer residents an anonymity so that they are not held accountable for their rubbish.  Taylor Intelligence, which is recycling container and waste solution firm, says that the UK will have to figure out the problem of multi-occupancy dwellings if it is serious about achieving a zero waste nation, which is the goal declared by Environment secretary Hilary Benn.  Taylor claims that if the UK can solve this problem that they will be able to export the technology to the rest of the world.
