As the United Kingdom tries to get closer to being a zero waste country it has taken the considerable efforts of local councils to find ways to get their residents to recycle more. There are some local councils that have been extremely successful in the last year in getting their residents to get on board with greener and more sustainable lifestyles. A Devon City is celebrating as for the first time over one million pounds was made by a local council by selling its recyclable rubbish. Exeter, a city in Devon, made over one million pounds last year by selling its plastic, glass, and metal, which have gone up in value considerably over the last year.
The council contends that breaking even will still be a struggle but as prices for recyclables go up and more people get involved, it is possible. Each year the value of waste goes up along with the cost of dumping it into landfills. The local council of Exeter has introduced some innovative practices in an effort to increase recycling. The first thing was to implement a ten pound fine for households which mix non recyclables into their recycling bin. Exeter has seen the amount of recycled materials nearly double from seventeen percent all the way up to thirty three percent in the last year. Local officials say that there is still more that can be done, especially when it comes to plastic, of which only about a third gets recycled each year.
