Since it was announced that the United Kingdom was lagging behind many of its European counterparts when it comes to recycling and waste management. This has led local councils and businesses to look for ways to help increase the recycling rates in a variety of ways. Studies have shown that people are more likely to recycle if they are offered incentive to do so. This has led to some companies offering rewards for recycling things like mobile phones. Other factors that affect recycling rates are whether or not the recycling is made easy for the customer. People are far less likely to take part in recycling if it poses an inconvenience to them. This has led to some communities setting up centralized and convenient locations for their citizens to recycle.
This is true for shoppers in the Glasgow city center, who will now be able to recycle on the go because of a new Recycling Zone which has been established in St. Enoch Shopping Center. Many studies have shown that people often fail to recycle the rubbish that they create when they are outside of their home. The Recycling Zone hopes to allow people to recycle the glass, plastic, and metals that they may have accumulated during a day of shopping. This means that citizens carrying loads of rubbish around in their cars will be able to drop it off at a convenient location.
There are currently forty such Recycling Zones across the United Kingdom and there are plans for an additional forty to be established over the next year.
