Saskatoon, Canada is calling for a dramatic recycling increase with the approval of a new 20 year waste reduction plan in November. The wealth of Christmas waste pointed out the city’s poor performance in recycling as there is no kerbside recycling in Saskatoon whatsoever.
Councillor Gord Wyant commented that Saskatoon is significantly behind other communities in Canada when it came to reducing, reusing, and recycling and that he hoped the new plan would lead the city to reducing it’s “human footprint.”
The new plan mandates a user pay garbage collection system to be put in place two to five years from now. The fees are yet to be determined. The city would also have to purchase new technology for garbage trucks to carry out the plan. While the plan has been approved, the city council does not yet have any estimates of the average monthly residents could receive.
The idea of creating a mandatory garbage fee is “considered critical to the overall success of the programs recommended in the plan, as it provides strong encouragement for residents to take advantage of the new waste diversion programs,” the plan’s authors wrote in their final draft.
