UK Makes Big Investment in Wind

Over the last year the environment has become the number one topic of conversation around the world.  This is largely due to the Copenhagen summit on climate change in which the world’s leaders gathered to try and strike a deal that would severely reduce the amount of carbon emissions emitted into the environment.  However, according to the reports of most, the meetings were a failure, as leaders of the world were unable to agree on a timetable on when emissions must be reduced.  Many believe that China was the country that held things back, as it refused to sign a deal that would require them to reduce emissions by half over the next four decades.  This failure has led individual countries to work on their own ideas for change, as it became clear that world leaders could not be trusted to do the right thing.

The United Kingdom cemented its position as one of the leaders of producing sustainable energy as it announced that it would be investing heavily in offshore wind power.  The plan is to develop wind farms capable of producing thirty two gigawatts of energy.  The new wind energy would put the United Kingdom well on track to meeting the European Union’s directive to increase the amount of renewable energy by fifteen percent over the next ten years.

Gordon Brown said that even though the cost of building the turbines will reach nearly one hundred billion pounds, the cost of not doing anything would certainly be more.  Also, he expects that investments like this will create more than seventy thousand new jobs for Brits over the next decade.
