When people around the United Kingdom secretly pined for a white Christmas they really had no idea what they were asking for. They got their wish and then some as a quaint white Christmas has turned into a full blown winter storm which has covered the United Kingdom with ice, snow, and freezing temperatures. This has led to hundreds of school cancellations, missed flights, cancelled travel and has also made the roads and conditions unsafe for travelers. Thus far, nearly one hundred people around the United Kingdom have died from the effects of the winter weather either as a result of traffic accidents or exposure. This has forced the Met Office to issue an Emergency Severe Weather Warning for parts of the United Kingdom, including northern England and Wales.
Not only has the storm disrupted travel, but many services have had to be reduced or cancelled due to road conditions that are unsafe for even heavy duty trucks. Places like Stevenage even had to shut down their rubbish and recycling collection, which will be suspended through the weekend due to icy road conditions that make travel unsafe for the refuse trucks. After services resume in Stevenage they will go back to the normal schedule that existed prior to the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Although the environment is probably the last thing on most Brit’s minds, some are concerned about rubbish and recycling piling up in their homes with no place to put it. Authorities have warned travelers that unless it is absolutely vital they should stay off of the roads as much as possible.
