It is nice to have Christmas cards on the mantle but even the most sentimental person knows that eventually even the card from dear old granny is still getting tossed in the rubbish bin. The holiday season can be a time of great joy but also a time of great waste, as logic, common sense, and environmental propriety are often thrown out the window in the name of having something look pretty. Christmas cards are one such thing, a nice sentiment but ultimately wasteful and damaging to the environment. This is why the Woodland Trust launched its annual Christmas card recycling scheme, which aims to reduce some of that holiday waste. In an effort to draw even more attention to the cause, the Woodland Trust recruited the help of a few concerned celebrities.
The Woodland Trust encourages recycling as a way to reduce the number of trees which are cut down and to increase the number that are being planted. The money raised through recycling goes towards planting more trees and restoring forest areas around the United Kingdom. Tony Robinson believes so much in the scheme that he did some advertisements for the Woodland Trust. One of the stars of Blackadder, Robinson used the spot to stress the important role that forests play in our ecosystem by creating oxygen and removing harmful carbon from the air.
This holiday season has been more focused on the environment than any other as it comes directly on the heels of the Copenhagen climate summit, which many deemed a failure.
