When most people think of trees during the holiday season they think of the evergreen that adorns their living room and acts as a shelter for Santa’s many gifts. After all, the Christmas tree is one of the most enduring symbols of Christmas and every year millions of homes around the world are filled with the scent of a freshly cut tree. However, there are other trees that people should be thinking about during the holidays and those are the ones that must be cut down to produce the tonnes of greeting cards and wrapping paper that will be sent and used during Christmas. This has led some local councils in the United Kingdom to come up with some innovative ways to get people to think about recycling paper during the holidays.
The Forest Steward Council, which is an organization focused on the management of the world’s forests, has partnered with some local stores in Wales to offer customers a way to save a few trees. The Council has teamed with Sainsbury’s supermarkets in South Wales to offer recycling bins in which customers can throw greeting cards and certain types of wrapping paper. Sainsbury’s even offers a collection service in which their delivery drivers will pick up paper for recycling. Studies have shown that people are more likely to recycle if it is made easy for them and with Sainsbury’s pick up service it could not be much easier.
These are the types of local schemes that will be necessary if the world is going to slow or stop the climate change associated with waste.
