There are many reasons to adapt to a greener lifestyle ranging from the ethical all the way to the financial bottom line. Some people choose to live environmentally friendly lifestyles because they actually care about the world that they live in and would like to see the animals, plants, and humans survive to see future generations. Other people are motivated by different factors, like money, which may not be as noble, but is still an effective way to get people to do something that they might not normally do. Studies have shown that people are more likely to recycle if there is something in it for them. The European Union has taken a different approach by threatening countries and councils with fines if they do not decrease the size of their landfills.
This threat has led local councils around the United Kingdom to do whatever they need to do to divert waste from landfill and avoid increasingly devastating fines. A recycling firm in Buchan has tried to take advantage of the local councils desire to avoid the hefty fines that councils like Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire had levied against them last year when they did not reach their landfill targets. Keenan Recycling has recently announced that it will expand its collections to allow restaurants, hotels, and schools to recycle food waste. The company aims to make use of the massive vertical composting unit that it just purchased to raise the amount of organic matter it recycles from thirty thousand tonnes to seventy thousand tonnes per year.
