As the world slowly comes to terms with the fact that climate change is a very real threat that must be dealt with, people are looking for new ways to get greener. This has led the governments of the world to put pressure on local governments and councils to come up with new and innovative ways to reduce waste and increase recycling rates. After the debacle known as the Copenhagen climate summit people are even more acutely aware of the fact that it will take local efforts for any real change to be made. This desperation has brought out the best in people, as a stream of new innovations are being invented which will change the way we live, especially when it comes to waste and energy.
One of the most exciting ideas to come out of the green technology revolution is turning our waste into energy. Not only does this keep waste from landfills but it stops the need to rely on dangerous and harmful fossil fuels as our primary source of energy. All types of organic matter can be turned into energy through a variety of processes that are being implemented all over the United States and the UK. Recently Lighthouse Caledonia made an announcement that they would be using organic bi-products from farmed salmon to create energy in the new plant that they plan to build in Arnish.
The plant will take the waste that was formerly shipped to Norway to be made into pig feed supplements and process it at their plant. The matter would first be allowed to decompose to produce methane that would help power engines to create electricity.
