LiveEarth, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival and the Paleo Festival Nyon Win ‘Green’ Awards

At the Midem Green World Awards in Cannes, France will honour three of the world’s largest music concerts, LiveEarth, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, and Paleo Festival Nyon. The awards recognise festivals that have promoted a greater awareness of environmental issues.

LiveEarth set a goal to create “green guidelines” in order to create a “low-impact” event. The concert series was featured around the world, and included a show at London’s Wembley stadium. The concert series took place in July 2007, and the show’s theme was to create awareness of climate change.
Roskilde, in Denmark, is one of Europe’s largest music festivals. At the event, all drinks are served in plastic mugs, 97% per cent of which were returned to deposit points. The concert was first held in 1971, and draws more than 100,000 people each year. Radiohead will perform there in 2008.
Paleo Festival Nyon in Switzerland uses a single, green energy source—a wind and water energy plant in the Swiss Alps. The festival was first held in 1976 and is visited by more than 220,000 people each July. Known for its varied lineup, visitors can see everything from rock, hip-hip, classical music, street theatre, and French chanson. Last year, the Arctic Monkeys and Pink played there.
