The environment has been one of the most discussed topics over the last decade according to a recent study into internet searches. As the decade comes to an end the world is seemingly at a crucial time when it comes to the planet as climate change, pollution, overpopulation, and a variety of other environmental issues now threaten to change our way of life. The United Nations summit on climate change offered hope that world leaders would rally around the idea of a global resolution to reduce carbon emissions in an attempt to slow global warming. After many have declared the summit a failure councils and small towns around the world realized that if they wanted to see real change in their own environment than they would have to do it themselves and not rely on laws to dictate what everyone knows has to be done.
Nottingham is one city that has taken its environment into its own hands instead of relying on national targets to guide them. Nottingham has made its own set of environmental goals that will guide many changes that the council hopes to see in the future. The council hopes to collect more recycling by making the process easier and giving residents a wider variety of bins. In addition, carbon can be saved by creating bio-fuels from various types of food waste. Nottingham has already exceeded the government’s 2020 target for landfill diversion, and is now working on getting the recycling rate to the government standards well ahead of schedule.
