Over the last year the United Kingdom has come under fire for its failure to reach many of the recycling and waste management goals outlined by the European Union. This has led to a flurry of schemes which aimed at getting residents to recycled more and produce less waste. Because of these efforts the United Kingdom has seen some improvement in recycling rates and local councils have stepped up to the government challenge to come up with new and innovative ways to get their residents to live greener lifestyles. Some councils have chosen to reward people for their efforts by offering cash rebates or vouchers to those households which recycle the most, while other councils have chosen to punish those who are not recycling with punitive taxes aimed at changing their negative behavior. As people become greener, some studies are being carried out to see which residents in the United Kingdom are doing the most for the environment.
A recent study showed that residents in Wandsworth were the greenest in the United Kingdom. Experian, who are market analysts, carried out the study which found that nearly sixty percent of the residents of Wandsworth are what is known as eco-evangelists, or those people who show deep commitment to environmental issues. Ironically, only the city of London scored higher, which is dubious considering it was recently named as Europe’s dirtiest city.
Wandsworth, as well as other local councils, were happy to receive the news as they say it makes it easier to identify the areas in which they need to improve.
