For the first time in history people are looking for ways to turn their white Christmas into a green one. That is because environmental issues are on the forefront of people’s mind this year, as climate change has become one of the most important issues of modern times. As the United Nations summit on climate change wraps up people are starting to realize that government leaders are not going to be the ones to save them and that it will take the efforts of individuals to slow the effects of climate change. That is why local councils around the United Kingdom are reminding holiday revelers that they should not forget their duties to the environment just because it is the holiday season.
One of these councils is the Lichfield District Council which has been trying to remind their residents of some ways to make their holidays a little more environmentally friendly. In addition to telling people about the pickup schedule over the holidays, the council has put out friendly reminders for residents to recycle their Christmas trees. Trees can be recycled in many ways, some recommend that the trees be replanted, but if this is not an option then recycling is the best bet. There are many ways in which people can be greener while still enjoying their normal holiday activities.
One thing that generally goes overlooked is the massive amount of waste involved with wrapping paper. Environmental groups suggest re-using paper when possible and to try to use wrapping paper made from recycled materials.
