One of the biggest issues over the past year has been the environment. In addition to the thousands of news articles covering such events at the United Nations summit on climate change, there have also been movements within countries for people to get greener. Governments have been putting pressure on local councils and businesses to come up with schemes that will encourage people to recycle and reduce waste. With the holiday season approaching it is only natural that people would think of ways to make this year’s Christmas greener. According to Friends of the Earth there are a variety of ways that people can turn a white Christmas into a green one.
Many people probably don’t realize that some of the things that they do as part of their holiday tradition are actually very bad for the environment. One of these things is the Christmas tree itself which Friends of the Earth suggests should be replanted if there are roots or recycled if there are not. They also recommend that customers trying to make a smaller carbon footprint should buy as many of their gifts and food items from local vendors to cut down on carbon emitted during shipping. Of the many other tips one will also help the figure as they suggest walking short distances during the holidays instead of taking a car.
Organic foods, retro furniture as a gift, and even changing wrapping paper can all be ways to cut down on carbon emissions. Friends of the Earth suggests re-using wrapping paper, or using things like the funny pages from the newspaper as wrapping and then recycling it.
