Recent studies have shown that people are more likely to recycle their old mobile phones if there is some type of incentive to do so. This incentive can come in many forms, as some companies offer vouchers to popular stores, while others just offer hard cash. While this may seem like nothing more than people just being greedy, it is what it is, and recent surveys have shown that only a small percentage of those who recycle phones do so without some type of reward. However, not all of these rewards are completely selfish as a high number of people who recycled their phones did so by giving them to charitable organizations.
One such scheme comes from Consumer Cellular, which is working with local businesses in the state of Oregon to help raise funds through the recycling of mobile phones. Proceeds from the thousands of recycled phones will be given to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. Thus far the company has been able to raise more than thirty thousand dollars for the hospital, largely through the recycling efforts of its customers. Organizers of the campaign say that even in these tough economic times there are small ways in which people can help make a difference. The scheme makes it easy for people to recycle by providing customers with a pre-paid envelope that they can use to mail in their outdated phones free of charge.
Studies have shown that in addition to incentives, ease is one of the biggest motivating factors when it comes to recycling mobile phones.
