New Gasification Plant to be Built in London

The United Kingdom has been looking for ways to get greener after it was revealed that the UK was far behind most of its European counterparts when it came to waste management and recycling.  Although the recycling rates have increased dramatically over the last few years, landfills are reaching capacity at a rapid rate, which has led the government to invest in businesses that are doing their part to divert waste from landfills.  This has led the energy from waste business to be one of the fastest growing segments of the waste management industry.  A recent announcement revealed that a new eighty million pound waste plant will be built at Ford Dagenham Site.

The plant will be able to power more than fifteen thousand homes and will create energy from the one hundred thousand tonnes of waste that it collects from the nation’s capital.  The London Waste Recycling Board has promised twelve million pounds in funds to the East London Sustainable Energy Facility.  The facility will be the largest in all of the United Kingdom and the first of its kind in London.  The facility will use the gasification process, which has rapidly become one of the most popular ways to convert waste into energy.  The plan will have the ability to create around 18 to 20 megawatts of electrical energy and about 10 megawatts of thermal power.

Mayor Boris Johnson said that it was time that London started turning its waste into capital and energy and that there were millions to be made and saved by converting waste into energy.
