Tax Breaks for Electric Cars

As the world tries to become greener, governments around the world are offering incentives to help businesses change their ways.  Not only are governments putting pressure on businesses to come up with new and innovative schemes to get their customers to recycle more and waste less but they are also offering incentives for businesses to make the switch over to greener technologies and practices.  Recently the car industry of the United Kingdom applauded the new laws that would offer tax breaks to people who buy electric cars.  The tax break has already been extended to individual citizens who purchase electric cars, but now it will be offered to commercial and fleet buyers.

Alistair Darling made the announcement that electric vehicles would be exempt from company tax.  In addition, companies who purchase electric vehicles will be able to write them off as a business expense.  This is a huge boost for companies which have large fleets of cars, as they can not only save money on the cars themselves, but on the taxes for owning the vehicles.  The government announced earlier this year that breaks of two thousand and five thousand pounds would be given to private buyers of electric cars.    Business and fleet buyers have been put under pressure to get greener and it is thought that this tax incentive will give them the motivation that they need to make the change.

Some companies, like Renault, were delighted at the decision, as they have plans to release two new electric cars later this year and also release an electric version of their popular Kangoo van.
