Protestors Arrested in Copenhagen

The United Nations summit on climate change has been a hot topic of discussion over the last few months as opinions began to emerge about whether or not the summit would be effective in getting the world to come to some binding resolutions over carbon emissions.  Some prominent world leaders expressed doubt that anything would get done and all but wrote the event off as a lot of politicking that would lead nowhere.  Spirits began to rise as it was announced that Barack Obama would attend the event.  The United States is one of the key players in the summit and will play a large role in any changes as both China and India have indicated that they will not make changes unless the United States does so first.  The potential ineptitude of the summit has drawn the ire of protesters who have taken the streets of Denmark.

Over two hundred of these protestors were arrested by police after a peaceful demonstration turned violent and protestors clashed with police.  Police stopped an unauthorized demonstration that was moving through the streets and confiscated gas masks and bolt cutters from some of the group’s leaders.  Thus far only a few of those arrested were actually kept in custody, three of which will appear in court soon to face charges of fighting with police.

Many are blaming the Danish police for the problems as they seemed to have arrested a lot of people who were doing nothing wrong.  The police arrested over one thousand people and only detained three of them, which shows that they were making arbitrary arrests, according to some.
