Since the beginning of organized government politicians have been criticized for not doing the things that they demand of others. This type of hypocrisy angers voters who prefer that their leaders be the change that they want to see in the world rather than talk about it. Some have been lambasted over their choice of automobile or cookie, while others have had their lifestyles called into question when they seem to be at odds with the person’s political stance. Al Gore is one example of a politician who was raked over the coals for choices that he made in this personal life. After being one of the most outspoken people against climate change it was revealed that Gore lived in a mansion which was anything but environmentally friendly. Ed Miliband is the most recent politician to take a beating in the media, this time for his choice of nappies.
Miliband recently incurred the wrath of middle class mothers when he revealed that he chose to use disposable nappies for his six month old son. On an internet chat on the Mumsnet website Miliband reopened Pandora’s Box when he admitted that he chose not to use cloth diapers. Miliband who is the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change has been all over the media lately asking for Brits to step up recycling and waste management efforts. This is why his nappy revelation was such a disappointment to mothers, who rank as some of the most concerned about environmental issues.
Miliband defended his statement by claiming that the environmental impact of disposable nappies is equal to that of cloth when water waste and delivery are factored into the equation.
