As environmental issues continue to be on the forefront of minds and media, businesses around the United Kingdom are searching for creative and unique ways to get greener. Many have turned to environmental audits which look at their practices and find ways in which the company can cut waste and increase recycling. Because of an increased focus on the environment organizations are looking to reward those businesses, councils, and communities which are doing the most to clean up the Earth. Recently the Keep Britain Tidy campaign handed out an award for the cleanest Business Village in the United Kingdom. The award scheme has been part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign for fifteen years, but as environmental issues become increasingly more important, the award has taken on additional weight.
This is the first year that the award has specifically recognized business villages. Oxton became the first to take home the new award which aims to acknowledge those business owners who are most committed to eliminating waste, making practical efforts to clean up their local environment, and increase recycling rates. This not only includes disposing of waste in a responsible way, but also promoting clean living by keeping their storefront clear of rubbish, litter, and graffiti. Oxton was an easy choice as more than ninety percent of its businesses were previous winners of a Tidy Business Award.
Representatives for the Oxton Village say that this award is an honor and is important as it shows that someone is paying attention to the hard work their businesses have done and continue to do.
