Network Rail Tries to Get Greener

Businesses and industries around the United Kingdom are keen to get greener for a variety of reasons.  The most obvious of course is that it is the right thing to do, but others are merely concerned with the bottom line.  Whether the reasons are philanthropic or economic the result is the same, companies are getting greener.  As people begin to reevaluate their lifestyles they are increasingly turning towards products and services that are more environmentally friendly.  This is certainly the case in the transportation industry where people are choosing to avoid automobiles and short haul flights and instead are using more public transportation like trains and buses.  This has led to one major player in the train company looking for ways to meet the demands of greener customers.

Network Rail, Britain’s largest train operator, recently announced a move that will help them meet the needs of 21st century commuters.  The railroad giant made the announcement that they plan to become greener by building a rail recycling center that will handle railroad waste materials like concrete sleepers and scrap metals from rails and fixtures.  The center, which will be built in Westbury hopes to not only reduce the amount of rail waste that ends up in landfills but also to promote the reuse of things like concrete sleepers and rail fixtures that can be used in a wide variety of ways.

Not only can concrete sleepers be re-used in rail projects, they can also be used in agriculture and to rebuild roads.  Network Rail feels this move will help them provide customers with the eco-friendly trains that they now expect.
